Overview

Information about alcohol consumption is typically gathered using self-report retrospective summary methods, retrospective diaries or, more rarely, prospective diaries. These methods are marked by drawbacks associated with the accuracy and/or detail of data they yield.

Collaborating with researchers from the University of Melbourne, a smartphone application was explored and delivered as a means of collecting more ecologically valid information about alcohol intake and patterns of consumption among healthy individuals.

Challenges

- Security and data sovereignty
- Migration of legacy solution
- Lack of existing system documentation

Outcome

- Used in ongoing research since 2015
- Its use has lead to publications such as (1) and (2)
- Has sparked interest in using mobile apps for other research (e.g. Monash)
